STEAM FOR FEMINIST
LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY

We integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and EcoSTEAM into schools through practical and creative programs. Girls engage in hands-on learning with kits, solar-powered media systems, and digital tools in school clubs and in our STEAM Discovery Room.

Our goal is to narrow the gender gap in STEAM by nurturing girls as critical thinkers, advocates, and future innovators. Together with ICT teachers, we create participatory, girl-friendly environments that build confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.

LIFE SKILLS AND REPRODUCTIVE
HEALTH EDUCATION

We deliver structured life skills sessions for girls in upper primary and secondary school, covering reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, healthy relationships, decision-making, and gender-based violence prevention. These sessions provide timely, accurate, and context-appropriate information to help girls take control of their health.

Recognizing that adolescent girls in Homabay face high rates of teenage pregnancy (33% of girls aged 15–19), our sessions are led by trained female mentors, health workers, and peer educators, often in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This approach ensures girls receive guidance, support, and practical tools to make informed choices.

SPORTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In Ndhiwa, many girls are told that sports and leadership are not for them. Poverty, cultural expectations, and early responsibilities often keep them silent and on the sidelines. Through football, netball, and other activities, we create safe spaces where girls reclaim their voices, build confidence, and learn teamwork, resilience, and leadership.

We also engage families to challenge stereotypes and open dialogue, showing what’s possible when girls thrive. Beyond sports, drama, music, debate, and environmental clubs give children creative outlets to express themselves, address issues that matter, and find a sense of belonging in their communities.

BOOK CLUBS
AND SCHOOL LIBRARIES

Reading comprehension and literacy form the foundation for academic success, yet many rural schools lack age-appropriate books and functioning libraries. We work with partner schools to establish reading spaces and mobile libraries equipped with locally relevant books and multilingual resources.

Students are supported through book clubs and guided reading programs that strengthen their reading habits, vocabulary, and critical thinking, boosting both literacy and a love for learning.

EMPOWERING TEACHERS FOR
SUSTAINABLE CHANGE

Our teacher training model builds lasting capacity in schools by equipping educators with practical skills in gender-responsive teaching, digital literacy, library use, and science instruction. This empowers teachers to deliver programs effectively and independently while fostering inclusive, student-centered learning environments.

Beyond training, we support teachers as changemakers who lead initiatives like school farms, Girls Support Groups, Book Clubs, STEAM Clubs, 4K Clubs, and Mixed Gender Clubs. When teachers are trusted to take the lead, they drive transformation that strengthens classrooms, schools, and entire communities.

STEAM DISCOVERY ROOM
AND LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT

Our Learning Resource Centre hosts a STEAM Discovery Room and community library, designed to promote inclusive and lifelong learning. The Discovery Room gives children and youth space to explore science, technology, media, and creativity through hands-on tools and solar-powered resources.

Alongside it, the library provides storybooks, academic texts, and more for children and adults alike. Together, these spaces foster curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking while making learning accessible to all.

INCLUSIVE, GENDER-RESPONSIVE
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

We believe safer, more equal schools must engage boys in questioning the messages they grow up with. Too often, they are taught to lead at the expense of girls’ voices and rights. Our programs challenge this by creating inclusive spaces where boys and girls learn together.

Through life skills sessions and mixed activities, boys reflect on power, fairness, and respect. They listen to girls’ experiences and begin to see that real strength is empathy, and true leadership means standing with others—not above them. When boys choose respect, girls thrive

FEMINIST LEADERSHIP
AND ADVOCACY TRAINING

Girls already have the power—they don’t need saving, just spaces that trust them, tools that equip them, and allies who walk beside them. Our leadership and advocacy sessions, rooted in feminist values, help girls explore power in their lives, speak up on issues they care about, and grow the confidence to lead.

With mentorship and community support, girls take on roles from peer conversations to school campaigns, proving they are leaders now—not someday. When girls rise, they strengthen their schools and communities, showing that change begins when their voices are heard.
